The Bulgarian capital named after the temple, is one of the most ancient cities in Europe. As early as the Neolithic age the territory of the present-day million city was inhabited by primitive societies. In 4th c.AD, emperor Constantine the Great himself exclaimed – ‘Serdica is my Rome’, with reference to the city that saw rise and fall, that assumed different faces, and became known by different names - Serdica, Sredets, Triaditsa and Sofia.
From ancient times, Sofia was well-known as a spa centre, thanks to its 18 healing mineral and thermal springs. In the city rise more than 70 Eastern Orthodox churches and monasteries, many of which have become emblematic for the capital city whose motto is: “Grows but does not age”. Sofia is the only European capital, situated in the foothills of a mountain that rises to a 2500 m height and where the distance to the modern ski-runs is mere 20 minute drive from the centre of the town.
From the Neolith, Thracians, Slavs and proto-Bulgarians, through victories and defeats – the cultural heritage, concentrated in Sofia is unique with its 7000 – year history, and the city that does not age, proudly bears its name of Wisdom.
